Features of natural leather footwear

The uppers of gino rossi footwear are manufactured using only high quality natural leather, characterized by a number of indispensable features:

Porosity - This feature influences the ability of natural hides to protect the foot against temperature changes (heat insulation) and easy air permeability.

Hydrophilicity - Is conductive to rapid sorption of humidity and moisture by the leather, its retention and discharge to the outside (desorption). This set of features together with plasticity is referred to as the hygienicity of material.

Hydrophobicity - Is the ability of the leather surface to prevent water from penetrating inside the footwear. This feature is achieved by special treatment of leather that increases its natural resistance to water absorption. The permeability of 1.5 mm thick normally tanned leather is about 20 minutes. By an appropriate chemical treatment, resistance to water may be prolonged to several hours. Special purpose leather may have its resistance prolonged up to as much as 36 hours.

Special finishing - The external surface of leather may be prepared in such a manner as to prevent dirt sticking and ensure quick and easy cleaning. The footwear maintenance and care process appropriate for a given type of leather used in specific models is described in a leaflet attached to the footwear.

Types of leather:

THE UPPERS of Gino Rossi footwear utilize mostly calf hides, followed by cattle and goat hides. Minor quantities of exotic animal hides (birds, reptiles and amphibians) are also used.

Calf hides - are soft with a fine grain figure. Due to their properties, calf hides are the most valuable and precious material to produce high quality deluxe footwear uppers.

Cattle hides - are high quality hides with a smooth and strict grain. When properly tanned, they are palpably soft and springy.

Goat hides - are the thinnest and very precious hides used for footwear toplines. In spite of their finesse they are characterized by high resilience. Their grain has a neat figure, more distinct and durable than in calf hides.

Exotic animal hides (birds, amphibians and reptiles) - are used mainly to produce toe caps, quarters and various decorative inserts. The most frequently used bird hide is ostrich hide, which has a characteristic grain figure (thickly and evenly spaced dimples) Materials for reptile and amphibian leather include mainly hides of snakes, crocodiles and exotic lizards. The characteristic feature of these hides is a beautiful arrangement of scales and plates as well as varied coloration.

For lining, hides with high hygroscopic features (ability to absorb humidity and moisture) are used. The most common material for lining is pig hides, as the thick grain figure disqualifies this type of hides from being used for toplines. Other popular choices include sheep, goat or calf linings The latter (found in most gino rossi footwear) are used in high quality deluxe footwear due to their high price. Like external leather, lining may come as grainy, velvet, split, covered, dyed etc. Lining strengthens the topline and improves the heat insulation properties of footwear. Good lining hides have to offer high impregnability, easy sweat absorption and moisture permeability.
